Linking education data Chris Clarke (Talis) #emtacl10

No more innovations to systems of records. They are largely data silos. Complicated to integrate the information. You nee d specialised software engineers.
Na Y2K focus on interaction via the web. Information is stored in the cloud, outside the firewall. Integration with mashups and APIs.
Linked data is web 3.o way. Web data centred, not document centred, that’s different then what we did before. Designing databases for appropriation standardising databases to be linked without an expensive consultant.
Linked data is not for humans, but for machines to create a website. You don’t wee nothing else on the sites that use it. BBC gets information from other peoples databases, get the information from another website or include those as links.
UK government wants to make the UK World leader in publishing open data. Often data is theoretically open but not yet opened.
Why would we do this? Always more smart people outside your organisation then inside. If you publish openly smart people outside can use and work with your data and do inoovation wit hit you never thought of. Why shouldn’t we open the data.

nieghbourhood newspapers based on postal codes.
Now we need to change peoples attitudes towards data.

Open education
Lets make al the content we use open and give other people more space to use it, in stead of trying to get it. value is in creating relationship. Opening up of the content is only stage one.
Peer2peer university. Classes online for free in a semi formal manner over a semester.
Flatworld parts of books printed on demand. Channel for people to get the wanted data, publishers licence the content as open data.
Open high school in utah. Time not spent on building content they can spend on student interaction.

The hardest thing is to convince people to open up their data. Systems are important withing your organisation.but open data will allow more innovation, so we should change the public opinion. Who will be the First open data university.

How archiving research data?open acces journals, and the results of scientific experimentation, publishing in open access journals doenst open up the data. Only the conclusions. Issues with the data is in volume, that’s just a matter of time. Changing attitude policy and licensing. Identifying the leaders in your field.
